WINCHESTER FESTIVAL - Thursday 12 July at 9pm
Winchester Cathedral

Tickets £15

We returned to the Winchester Festival under the baton of our new musical director, Katherine Dienes-Williams. Rachmaninov’s All-Night Vigil is an a capella composition viewed by many as the composer’s finest achievement. The settings of texts from the Russian Orthodox evening service are profoundly evocative and deeply moving, revered for their rich textures and sumptuous scoring.

The Festival concert came after Southern Voices’ first visit to Guildford, where we performed the Vespers alongside unaccompanied works by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt and by Sir John Tavener. Although these were written many decades later, they are rooted in the same Orthodox Church tradition and provide an interesting contrast.
