Zoltan Kodaly (1882-1967) was one of the leading personalities of 20th century Hungarian music, achieving fame in many fields including composition and musical education. Like his English contemporary Vaughan Williams, Kodaly was an avid collector of traditional folk songs and we included a number of his arrangements in the programme for this concert, celebrating the 50th anniversary of his death. He also composed many original works, including a number of fine choral pieces including his Evening Hymn (1904) and Missa Brevis (1942, 1948).
