Favourite memories of the year:
SPEM IN ALIUM was a once in a lifetime opportunity for present choir members to join forces with former members to create a huge choir approaching 120 voices! Jamal conducted from the centre of the chapel and we formed an enormous circle around him, and the audience! The acoustic worked its magic and this ancient work found its wings and flew! Unforgettable.
GALA CONCERT was so much fun (especially at the after-party!) but also, the performance with Endelienta Baroque was a real treat for us as singers - Jamal had coached us to new levels of detail and interpretation of these well-loved pieces and once again St Paul's was full to the gunnels.
The WELLS WEEKEND was amazing. It re-connected us socially and bound us together, cementing friendship and creating new. We were heartened to find that we had a very good audience even in Somerset! And the choice of music was exceptional - we will never forget the Howells sung in that collegiate setting. Very special indeed and what a privilege.
The anniversary also prompted us to form new links: we launched our Choral Scholarship scheme successfully in September and also our online newsletter for our supporters and an opportunity to fully support us and join us with our Friends' Programme. We had terrific sponsorship from D'Oyly Carte Charitable Trust and the Winchester Round Table.
Below you will find each concert as it was listed at the time together with the subsequent review. Enjoy!
Spem in Alium
Saturday 23rd March 2024, 7:30pm
Chapel of St Cross, Winchester
What better piece is there to celebrate 40 years of music making than Thomas Tallis’s monumental 40-part motet Spem in alium. 40 years for 40 voices? This is a work that celebrates the real art of composition, a polyphonic masterpiece that is cleverly crafted to create a surround-sound effect in which the audience is centre stage.
Other works in this programme have been chosen for their celebratory nature, both of glorious music-making and compositional genius.
