A word from our Musical Director...

Join Southern Voices this Spring, in the beautiful surroundings of Holy Trinity Church, Winchester, for an evening to celebrate four pillars of human existence: Hope, Faith, Life and Love.

Our programme is centred around Frank Martin’s Mass for Double Choir. Written in 1922, it’s a real triumph of the twentieth century combining intensely personal moments of religious contemplation with outbursts of overwhelming glory. Martin kept this work hidden away for years and years, but always made mention of JS Bach as his great compositional influence; hence, we also hear another 8-part motet work by the Baroque master, his Ich lasse dich nicht, itself also a work of great mystery and telling a story encompassing all of our themes. Amongst shorter motets in the second half, Southern Voices performs Eric Whitacre’s Three Songs of Faith. As the composer says, these are “a cycle of pieces about my own personal faith”, the third of which gives its title to our concert this evening. Each piece is a setting of American poet E E  Cummings, these works all show so much vibrancy and colour through the music.

An evening of great meaning and reflection awaits, a celebration of new and old, light and dark, of Hope, Faith, Life and Love.
